New rules for changing driving tests

From 9 June 2026, each time you change your driving test, you will be able to either:

  • stay at the same time centre

  • move to one of the 3 nearest test centres at that time

  • move to the test centre you first booked at

The service to change your driving test appointment will show your available options from 9 June 2026.

This rule only applies to car driving tests. You will still be able to move other types of tests to any driving test centre in Great Britain.

New Driving Test Centre Rules from 9 June 2026

From 9 June 2026, major changes come into effect that limit where you can move your car driving test.

These rules are designed to stop people booking tests far away and moving them around later — but they also mean much less flexibility for learners.

What’s Changing?

From this date, you can no longer move your test anywhere in the country.

Instead, you are limited to:

  • The 3 nearest test centres to your current booking

  • Or the original test centre you booked

How It Works

When you book your test, that location determines your future options.

If you decide to change your test:

  • Your first change must be to one of the 3 nearest centres

  • Your second change will then be based on the new location

👉 Each move resets your “nearest 3 centres” based on where your test is currently booked.

Important Example

  • You book at Centre A

  • You change to a nearby Centre B

  • Your next move is now limited to the 3 centres closest to Centre B (plus possibly your original centre, depending on your changes)

This creates a chain effect, keeping your test within a small local area.

Already Booked a Test Before 9 June?

The rules still apply — but with a twist:

  • Your options will be based on where your test is booked on 9 June 2026

  • Not where you originally booked it

👉 This means if you’ve already moved your test before June, your “starting point” resets.

What This Means for Learners

  • ❌ No more booking far-away tests and moving them closer later

  • ❌ No more “test swapping” across the country

  • ✔ You’ll need to commit to a local test area from the start

Key Advice

  • Choose your test centre carefully from the beginning

  • Don’t rely on moving locations later

  • Plan ahead — your flexibility will be very limited

Bottom Line

From 9 June 2026, your driving test becomes location-locked to a small group of nearby centres.

👉 Where you book is now more important than ever.
