🚗 Driving Test Swaps: What You Need to Know (2026 Update)
If you’re struggling to find a better driving test date, a test swap could be the solution—but the rules have changed.
🔄 What is a driving test swap?
A swap is not the same as changing your test. Instead of searching for a new slot, you exchange your booking with another learner driver.
Just remember:👉 It counts as 1 of your 2 allowed changes.
👥 Who can swap?
From 12 May 2026, only learner drivers themselves can arrange swaps.
You must swap directly with another learner
The swap must be for the exact date, time, and test centre
No instructors, apps, or websites can do it for you (this is now illegal)
✅ Key rules to check before swapping
1. Changes remainingBoth drivers must still have at least 1 change left.
2. TimingYou must request the swap at least 10 full working days before the earliest test.
3. Location rules (important update)
Before 9 June 2026: swaps can be anywhere
After 9 June 2026: swaps must be within:
The same test centre
One of the 3 nearest centres
Your original test centre
4. Test type must matchYou can only swap like-for-like:
Weekday ↔ Weekday
Evening/weekend ↔ Same
Extended/disability tests ↔ Same type
🚘 Don’t forget your instructor
Before swapping, both learners should check:
You’re actually test-ready
Your instructor is available for the new slot
📞 How to swap (important)
Swaps can ONLY be done by phone.
Call DVSA: 0300 200 1122
Both learners must be available at the same time
DVSA will call the other person to confirm
🚫 You cannot swap:
Online
By email or WhatsApp
Through social media
🔐 Stay safe
Never share personal details with another learner, including:
Driving licence number
Address or contact info
Payment details
DVSA will never ask for your full card number or security code.
❗ If something goes wrong
The swap will fail if:
Either person doesn’t answer the phone
Details don’t match
One of you has used both changes
👉 In that case, both tests stay exactly as they are.
🎯 After a successful swap
You take the other person’s test slot
They take yours
Your booking reference stays the same
📩 You won’t get a confirmation email—but your next reminder will show the new details.
🧠 Final thought
Test swapping is now tighter, fairer, and more controlled. If you plan it properly and follow the rules, it can still be a powerful way to get a better test date.
